Companies with a turnover of £50m or above are more likely to report CSR and diversity performance

A recent survey conducted by KPMG reveals that there is a clear correlation between company size and its focus on CSR and diversity. KPMG research reveals that there appears to be a sustainability and diversity threshold – around £50m in turnover – at which companies implement, monitor and publicly report sustainability and diversity performance.

KPMG’s research found that companies from the technology sector are least focused (20%) on their sustainability and diversity agenda whereas travel companies are found to be most focused (50%).

Above the £50m threshold companies are twice as likely to have CSR and diversity policies in place and are typically measuring twice as many attributes of their policies. Reporting in the public domain is also substantially more common above the threshold than for smaller companies.

Mark Powderham, KPMG’s Head of Procurement, Europe commented:
“We conducted the survey with a view to establishing two things about the supply-base. Firstly, to what extent do companies share our corporate values with regard to CSR, diversity and inclusion. As an organisation we are proud of our CSR and diversity credentials and as such we want to work with organisations for whom these agendas are equally important. Secondly, to what extent does the demographic profile of companies reflect the demographics of the communities in which we work. Just as it makes perfect business sense to cast the net as widely as possible in the ‘war for talent’, KPMG is equally committed to ensuring that we tap the full value, flexibility and innovation available from the wider market place”.

KPMG’s research was based on a survey of 955 companies (of all sizes and sectors) that supply the firm with goods and services. The research shows that over 61% of companies have a diversity policy in place, 53% have a CSR policy and only 13% have environmental management certification e.g. ISO 14001 – an environmental standard first introduced in 1996.

Key CSR measures deployed by companies include waste reduction, recycling and energy consumption. 60% of companies measure waste reduction and recycling, 55% measure energy consumption, and 45% measure water consumption.

The research also identified that amongst those companies monitoring and reporting their diversity performance, 50% of companies monitor gender. Age is the second most widely monitored criterion with (48%), followed by race/ethnicity (46%) and then disability (45%). Companies were also asked about the demographics of their company’s ownership and workforce. The findings revealed that three in ten of companies are women-owned businesses and 5% of companies are minority ethnic (ME) owned businesses. According to national statistics, 10% of UK businesses are ME owned with 17% of businesses in London owned by ethnic minority groups.
